Life is short – no one knows that better than 17 year-old Lenni Petterssen. On the Terminal ward, the nurses are offering their condolences already, but Lenni still has plenty of living to do.
For a start, she has questions about her fate she needs answers to, and stories yet to uncover.
When she meets 83-year-old Margot, a fellow patient in purple pyjamas offering new friendship and enviable artistic skills, Lenni’s life begins to soar in ways she’d never imagined.
As their bond deepens, a world of stories opens up: of wartime love and loss, of misunderstanding and reconciliation, of courage, kindness and joy.
Stories that have led them to the end of their days.
Thank you to Penguin Australia for providing me with a copy of this book, in exchange for an honest review!
What was the last book that made you cry? Because gah, I had many tears reading this one 😅
Lenni and Margot are both on the May Ward in the hospital. They’re both terminally ill, Lenni 17 years old, Margot 83. When they bond over the new hospital art class, they realise between them they have lived 100 years and what better way to commemorate this than to create a piece of art for each year of their lives, each one telling a story of one of their memories.
As the story evolves, we’re taken through both Lenni and Margot’s memories, some good, some sad, as well as Lenni’s experience of day to day life in the hospital. Lenni’s other friend is Father Arthur, the priest who looks after the hospital’s chapel. Lenni’s probing questions over Father Arthur’s religion were both entertaining and kept the book from becoming too ‘religious’.
I adored Lenni and Margot equally and loved their attitude as well as their stories. For a book on such a sad subject, I laughed out loud on multiple occasions. The characters were just so wonderful.
This is an utterly beautiful, heart-pulling book that deserves all stars. I highly recommend getting your hands on this one!
