EXTREMITY

by the roads not taken. An SF novella about the ultrawealthy and their clones could reasonably be assumed to be in conversation with Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, but Extremity as a title is a bit of a red herring. It’s not about the clones being extensions of their prime selves, but rather about humanity reaching too far in its greed and Earth ultimately paying the price. The narrative framework is engaging but underused as the three stories basically line up, failing to generate sufficient tension about the evening’s outcome. While Binge’s longer works like Ascension are stunning in their scope, this tonally uneven adventure stumbles before it really gets started."

Our Review

This gritty graphic novel plunges readers into a brutal, post-apocalyptic world where survival hinges on prosthetic augmentation and sheer will. The story follows a young scavenger navigating treacherous landscapes and rival factions, where advanced cybernetics can mean the difference between life and death. Stark, visceral artwork amplifies the relentless tension, creating an immersive experience that doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of its setting. This is a raw and unflinching look at human resilience pushed to its absolute limits.

What sets this narrative apart is its profound exploration of identity and the cost of power, themes that will resonate deeply with mature young adult readers. The protagonist's journey is less about saving the world and more about saving their own humanity in a world that has forsaken it. Fans of dark science fiction and character-driven stories like The Road or The Marrow Thieves will find much to contemplate here. It’s a challenging, thought-provoking read that leaves a lasting impression about what we are willing to become in order to survive.
