Our Review

Mr Ruzzles P's riddle collection runs on a single rhyming format the whole way through: a short clue in verse, then a wordplay answer, like the one in its own description about something with "many blades" that isn't a chopper, where the answer turns out to be an insect once you put the word in front of "hopper". At 120 pages and pitched to a wide 5-to-12 age range, it holds together because the riddle format itself scales, younger kids can have the answer read to them, older ones can work the wordplay out solo. It comes from the same creator behind two earlier volumes of 101 What Am I? Riddles, per its own description, so the format isn't a first attempt.

Each riddle is short and self-contained, so none of it needs to be read start to finish or in order, which makes it easy to pull out for a five-minute stretch, a car ride, a wait at a restaurant, rather than committing to a full sitting. The rhyme is doing real work too: it's not just decoration, it gives a kid a rhythm to lean on while guessing, and a satisfying click when the rhyme and the answer land together. A good fit for a kid who likes wordplay and wants a few riddles at a time rather than a cover-to-cover book.
