About This Book
"If you like horror shows, bloodbaths, lying, stealing, backstabbing and cannibalism, then read on..." Who could tell the true stories of the gods and goddesses of Olympus better than modern-day demigod Percy Jackson? In this action-packed tour of Greek mythology, Percy gives his hilarious personal views on the feuds, fights and love affairs of the Olympians. Want to know how Zeus came to be top god? How many times Kronos ate one of his own kids? How Athena literally burst out of another god's h
Our Review
Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods hands the entire Olympian cast over to Percy Jackson as narrator, and his own warning up front, that this collection includes horror shows, bloodbaths, lying, stealing, backstabbing, and cannibalism, sets the tone before the first myth even starts. Rick Riordan uses Percy's voice to walk through how Zeus became the top god, what Kronos actually did to his own children, and how Athena's birth went about as strangely as birth stories get, treating Olympian family drama as the outrageous soap opera it actually is in the source myths. At 371 pages for ages 6 to 10, Penguin UK's edition covers a lot of mythological ground in one sitting.
The joke throughout is that Percy isn't a neutral narrator; he's got opinions about these gods and says so, which turns what could be a dry rundown of Greek mythology into something closer to hearing gossip about difficult relatives from the one family member willing to be blunt about it. That voice is also the bridge for kids who haven't read a Percy Jackson novel yet, since the mythology stands on its own here even without the earlier series behind it. For a kid who already loves Percy Jackson, it's more time with a familiar narrator; for one who's never read the novels, it works as a way into Greek mythology that doesn't read like a textbook.
