Our Review
A train, an airplane, a boat, a truck: Sarah L. Schuette counts backward through all of them in this bilingual counting book, walking down from a higher number toward zero using vehicles as the visual anchor for each digit. At just 18 pages, it's built for the youngest end of its 3-to-7 age range, with real photographs rather than drawings, and bold, uncluttered numerals that keep the focus on counting instead of busy background detail. The bilingual text, Spanish and English side by side, makes it work equally as a first counting book or as a way to build a second language alongside it.
Counting down instead of up is a small twist, but it changes the book's rhythm - instead of building toward a big number, it moves toward the anticipation of zero and whatever the countdown was leading to, which suits the "3, 2, 1, go!" framing right in the title. Photographs of real trains and airplanes will do a lot of the engagement work on their own for a kid obsessed with vehicles, turning what's structurally a straightforward number book into something they'll ask to look at again. Underneath the vehicle parade, it's a short, focused counting exercise rather than a sit-down story, which is exactly the size a three-year-old's attention span can handle.
