About This Book
A collection of poems evoking the world and feelings of childhood.
Our Review
Gyo Fujikawa pairs her own illustrations with a curated set of poems — some familiar rhymes, some lesser-known pieces — organized around the actual texture of being a small child: rainy days, bedtime thoughts, friendships, and the general business of noticing the world for the first time. Sterling's paperback edition runs 130 pages and is aimed at ages 3 to 7, long enough that it isn't a book you finish in one sitting so much as one you dip into over and over, a poem or two at a time. The illustrations are described as inclusive, reflecting a range of childhood experience rather than one narrow version of it.
Poetry gives this collection something a straight narrative picture book doesn't: short, self-contained pieces that a parent can pull out individually to match whatever a kid is feeling that day, rather than committing to a whole story. That makes it useful as a starting point for talking about emotions and small observations, not just as a bedtime read-aloud, since a single poem about a rainy day or a bedtime worry can open a conversation on its own. Returning to it over time also means a child gets something new out of it as they grow, since a poem that meant little at three can land differently at six or seven.
