About This Book
Baby explores the wonders of winter and identifies such winter items as a red sled, a giant snow plow, and a furry groundhog.
Our Review
Karen Katz's lift-the-flap board book walks a toddler through winter one flap at a time, with a red sled, a giant snow plow, and a furry groundhog all waiting to be uncovered under sturdy paper flaps. Katz's illustrations are bold and simple, and the text on each page stays short, which suits a toddler's attention span better than a book that asks them to sit through paragraphs before getting to lift anything. At 26 pages, Simon and Schuster's board book edition is built for a quick read a toddler can ask for again immediately after finishing.
Lifting the flaps does double duty: it's a small physical skill a toddler is proud of managing, and it turns each page into a tiny reveal instead of just another picture to glance at and move past. The winter objects are common enough, sleds, snow plows, that a toddler can connect them to what they're actually seeing outside that season, rather than learning words with no real-world anchor. It earns its spot in the board-book basket most in the weeks when snow is actually on the ground and the pictures on the page match what's happening right outside the window.
