Our Review

Tiah Short's early reader follows Jessica through a single household task, setting the table, and uses it to walk kids through counting plates, cups, and utensils one at a time as she goes. It's aimed at ages 5 to 8, which lines up with the one-to-one counting focus: kids at the older end of that range are usually past counting objects in isolation, but seeing it tied to a real chore gives the skill a reason to stick. The genre here is manners and etiquette, and that shows up in how the story frames helping out as something Jessica takes pride in rather than something she's told to do.

There's a practical payoff too: a kid who has watched Jessica count out the right number of plates has a script ready for the next time they're handed the same job at home. A companion song comes with the book, per its own tagging, giving it a second way in for a kid who responds better to music than to text alone. At close to 150 pages, it runs long for a table-setting story, so it likely works better as a book to dip into over several sittings than one to finish in a single read.
