About This Book
"Short sentences, lilting rhymes, and harmonious visuals help viewers grasp the subject matter. . . . A mycological charmer." --Kirkus Reviews (starred review) In gentle rhyme, this spare and whimsical picture book from the one-of-a-kind imagination of Kenneth Kraegel introduces little readers to all sorts of wonderful mushrooms: ones that grow up high and ones that never stay dry, ones that grow in a park and ones that glow in the dark, and even one made just for them! Our Review
Kenneth Kraegel's picture book takes an unusual bedtime subject, mushrooms, and turns it into a calm, rhyming wind-down. Short rhymes walk the child listener past mushrooms that grow tall, mushrooms tucked into parks, mushrooms that glow in the dark, and finally one imagined just for them, with quiet, harmonious illustrations carrying the same unhurried mood as the text. It is built for ages 3 to 7, and Candlewick's paperback edition is a lean 34 pages, short enough to finish in one sitting without dragging past the point where a tired kid stops listening.
What holds it together as a bedtime book rather than a nature book that happens to be read at bedtime is the pacing: nothing here is competing to be exciting, which is the point right before lights-out. Along the way it does double duty as a gentle introduction to how many different kinds of mushrooms exist and where they turn up, so a curious kid gets a little real-world noticing folded into the ritual. A solid choice if your rotation of bedtime rhymers has gone stale and you want the next one to be about something your child hasn't already heard a dozen picture books about.
